Starting in 2026, Class 10 students will have the opportunity to take board exams twice in the same academic year. This decision is an important step towards reducing exam-related stress and creating a student-centered education system under the National Education Policy 2020.

Understand the new examination system

Under the new system, Class 10 students will have the opportunity to participate in two separate examination phases. The first examination will begin on February 17, 2026, and will continue until early March. This examination will be mandatory for all registered students. Students who do not appear in the first examination will not be eligible for the second examination.

The second exam will be held from May 5 to June 1, 2026. This exam will be optional and available only to students who are dissatisfied with their performance. Students can retake the exam to improve a maximum of three subjects. The better of the two attempts will be recorded on the final marksheet.

Salient features of the examination system

Internal assessments, practical exams, and project work will be conducted only once before the first exam. These scores will automatically be valid for the second exam, eliminating the need for students to repeat them.

The results of the first exam are expected to be declared in April 2026, while the results of the second exam will be out by June 30, 2026. Final certificates will be issued after the completion of both exam stages.

Examination Controller Sanyam Bhardwaj clarified that students who failed one or two subjects in the first exam will be eligible to retake the second. However, students who failed three or more subjects will have to wait until the next academic session.

Curriculum and Assessment Methodology

The syllabus for both exams will remain the same. Questions will be asked from the full syllabus in both the February and May exams. The board has emphasized competency-based assessment, with approximately 40 to 50 percent of questions testing understanding and application.

Multiple-choice questions will comprise approximately 20 percent of the paper, while traditional short- and long-answer questions will comprise the remainder. In subjects like science and social science, students must write answers only in the designated sections of the answer sheet.

Impact on students and academia

Education experts consider this reform a progressive step towards a more humane and flexible education system. The dual examination system is similar to international educational practices and competitive exams like NEET, where multiple attempts are the norm.

Students aspiring to medical and engineering careers will especially benefit from this system. It provides early exposure to the multiple-attempt exam format, which will be useful for future competitive exams.

The Union Education Minister praised this initiative, calling it an important step towards reducing exam-related stress and creating a joyful learning environment. The Minister emphasized that this student-centered approach is an important implementation of the recommendations of the NEP 2020.

How to prepare for the new system

With the 2026 exams approaching, students are advised to consider their first attempt as their main exam, rather than considering the second attempt as a backup. Extensive preparation, regular practice of competency-based questions, and a deep understanding of concepts are essential for success.

Schools have been instructed to provide guidance to students and parents about the new system. It should be ensured that the second exam opportunity is viewed as a performance improvement mechanism, not as additional pressure or unrealistic expectations.

The CBSE has also announced that similar reforms are being considered for Class 12 exams, although no official timeline has been finalised yet.

The way forward

This transformative change in the CBSE examination structure signals a broader shift in Indian education. It reflects a move toward learner-centered policies that prioritize understanding over rote learning and provide students with appropriate opportunities to demonstrate their abilities.

Around 2.6 million students will be the first cohort to experience this dual examination system in 2026. The education community is watching with keen interest to assess its impact on student performance, mental health, and overall learning outcomes.

The Board has assured students and parents that detailed guidelines, date sheets and administrative procedures for both the examination phases will be released well in advance, giving all stakeholders sufficient time for preparation.

For latest updates and official notifications, students are advised to regularly visit the official website of CBSE at cbse.gov.in.

Important Tips for Exam Preparation

Experts recommend that students maintain a timetable and study regularly. Solving previous year question papers and practicing sample papers released by the CBSE will be extremely beneficial. It's also important to focus on weak areas and resolve doubts promptly.

Parents are urged to avoid putting unnecessary pressure on their children and provide them with a positive environment. Regular sleep, a balanced diet, and even some exercise or play are also important parts of exam preparation.

केंद्रीय माध्यमिक शिक्षा बोर्ड ने भारतीय शिक्षा व्यवस्था में एक ऐतिहासिक बदलाव की घोषणा की है। 2026 से कक्षा 10 के छात्रों को एक ही … Read more

[12
22,24,23,25
post-41","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","hentry","category-india","tag-cbse-board-exam","tag-cbse-new-rule-2026","tag-class-10-exam","tag-education-news
["GET
